SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society

SALUTE is the only national honor society recognizing and honoring the service and the scholastic achievements of students veterans.

SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society was made possible by an ACE/Wal-Mart Foundation Success for Veterans Grant, and is headquartered out of Colorado State University.

Service – Academics – Leadership – Unity – Tribute - ExcellenceFlag Salute

To SALUTE is to acknowledge, congratulate, pay respects, and recognize. These terms are synonymous with what SALUTE National hopes to do for our members who have shown courage, strength, leadership, excellence, and perseverance in their military endeavors and now are showing that same commitment to their academic careers.
The students who are inducted into SALUTE represent every slice of American military and veterans in higher education, at two and four year institutions. Members include retirees, disabled veterans, active duty military, National Guard and reservists returning to higher education, starting second careers, or helping fund their college careers with military service.

Benefits of individual membership include:

  • One-time payment for lifetime membership

  • A certificate and military-style challenge coin commemorating the individual’s membership in SALUTE and their specific level of academic achievement

  • Opportunities to network as well as receive and give assistance to fellow members

  • Purchase graduation regalia to demonstrate their academic achievements as veterans

  • Participate in future SALUTE programs

Chapter membership allows institutions to hold induction ceremonies honoring their own high achieving student veterans, advertise their affiliation with SALUTE, and improve recruitment and networking among veteran students. SALUTE sets minimum standards for selecting students to be honored and permits each chartered institution to define additional criteria according to their local chapter. This approach will allow for a vast array of military and veteran students to be honored each year all across the country at diverse institutions.
Students selected for membership can either become part of their locally organized chapter, or be nominated and inducted to the National Chapter. The locally created and registered/recognized chapters can take every imaginable form. Some are honorary societies in the strictest sense of the word, existing solely to honor their members. Others can meet campus social needs, leadership needs, even activism needs on some campuses. The goal is to recognize outstanding students through SALUTE to meet their greatest needs and SALUTE is a way to show the hard work and dedication of student veterans.
Each academic institution has different ideas on what their chapter should be. This is by design based on the demographic and number of student veterans at each institution. Some colleges and universities have an entirely student run organization, however, it is our policy that the director (or administrator) must be a college staff member. The SALUTE Coordinator (or assistant) can be staff or student, and/or the director and coordinator may be the same person, as long as they are a staff member of the school. Some organizations participate in community service and university events. Other institutions have their chapter of the honor society as part of a community outreach and mentor programs, or simply hold ceremonies to recognize their student veterans as they go from a 2 to 4-year school, or as they graduate. SALUTE Honor Society is what you make it. Whether large or small, there is no limit on awarding and recognizing your student veterans.
